TEMPLEOGUE SYNGE STREET 2-9 NA FIANNA 0-14 Two first half goals did the trick for Templeogue Synge St as they held off a battling Na Fianna in Friday night's Dublin SFC second round encounter at Parnell Park. Both goals came in the last ten minutes of the opening half as Synger recovered from a slow start to lead 2-5 to 0-6 at the interval. The St Mobhi Road side had opened up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead inside ten minutes through points from Adam Caffrey (two, one free) and a fine individual effort from Conor McHugh. However, points from Declan Treanor and the influential Eoghan O'Gara, who scored 1-4, had the southside men on level terms before Denis Bastick clinically despatched a 20th minute penalty past replacement goalkeeper Conor McCarville after Ryan O'Flaherty was black-carded following the concession of the spot-kick. McHugh responded for Na Fianna but Synger really came to life approaching the interval with points from Tommy Coyle and a great score from Bastick. O'Gara almost grabbed a goal but his thunderbolt cannoned off an upright after he was through one-on-one against McCarville. But before the break he did raise a green flag to help his side to a five-point half-time lead. Six minutes into the second half David Quinn was denied from close range by Synger keeper Philip Collie and it was not the only occasion in the second half when last-ditch heroics were called for to keep their goal intact. With 17 minutes remaining a Ger Vickery point following excellent approach play by Niall Scully established a six-point lead for Synger, 2-8 to 0-8. But Na Fianna then enjoyed their most productive spell as Carl O'Connor came into the game at midfield and sub Eoghan Neville carried the fight to their opponents. Points form Jack Caffrey (free), Neville, Adam Caffrey (free) and Quinn cut the deficit to just two points. Crucially though O'Gara scored the next point of this duel to stall Na Fianna's momentum. Inside the last five minutes Neville went very close to rattling the net - his shot beat keeper Collie but centre-back Niall O'Sullivan got back on the line in the nick of time to save his goal bound effort. The game concluded with Na Fianna tagging on points from Adam Caffrey and McHugh but they ran out of time as Synger advanced to the quarter-finals. In a game where they led from the tenth minute onwards, the Templeogue side dominated the physical exchanges throughout, and had a match-winner in GrassRootsGAA Star Man Eoghan O'Gara, who bagged 1-4 from play in an exceptional individual performance. They have now qualified to play the reigning All-Ireland Club Champions, St. Vincent's, in the last eight, a formidable challenge by any token. You would worry for them if Eoghan O'Gara is well marshalled up front, but that's a job for another day as they are entitled to bask in the glow of a well-earned victory. Unfortunately for Na Fianna, the absence of county star Johnny Cooper through injury deprived their young side of his much needed experience, as their tactical naivety was chronically exposed throughout the game. They have a host of talented players but they are struggling to stitch them together into a top senior side at present. If anything the game showed that league form is an inexact science when it comes to previewing games at senior level, as Synge Street are a completely different side with their county players Eoghan O'Gara and Denis Bastick playing. You never would have guessed Na Fianna were 4th in Division One with Templeogue hovering just above the relegation zone from the way the match unfolded. As a game it started slowly with Templeogue withdrawing their corner forward Declan Treanor out to midfield,to allow the likes of Conor McKiernan to drop back as a second centre back. Na Fianna elected to leave their sweeper in their own half back line. The way it operated ultimately led to their downfall. Eoghan O'Gara opened the scoring for Templeogue after three minutes with a well taken score off his right. Na Fianna enjoyed their best spell of the game over the next 10 minutes as Adam Caffrey and Conor McHugh started brightly. A nice pass from midfielder JJ Martin to Caffrey saw the centre forward strike a fine effort from 30 metres. It was the turn of Dublin's star U21 forward Conor McHugh to show his class. The first, a free, which Caffrey converted, where he won the ball ahead of a couple of defenders, and the second where he turned inside two defenders, dummied off his left and kicked a beauty off his right to put his side 0-3 to 0-1 ahead. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for Na Fianna as Synge Street answered with an excellent out-swinging point from roving corner forward Declan Treanor on 15 minutes. This was before O'Gara added another excellent score to level the game. The full forward collected a ball 40 yards out, held off three Na Fianna defenders and promptly kicked it over from 25 metres. Straight from the resulting kick-out Templeogue hit for their first major, O'Gara played in wing forward Tommy Coyle with a quick hand-pass and the wing forward was upended by Na Fianna goalkeeper Ryan O'Flaherty. O'Flaherty was black carded for the offence and replaced by substitute 'keeper Conor McCarville. Dublin star Denis Bastick took the resulting kick, and finished with aplomb to put his side 1-3 to 0-3 ahead after 18 minutes. Na Fianna were using the tactic of placing all their kick-outs on top of wing-forward Paddy Quinn, and while it worked for a short-time, Synge Street simply started to flood that area with numbers and won most of the resulting breaks. As a result, Na Fianna struggled to get out of their own half as they neglected to vary any of their kick-outs. Tommy Coyle added another point for Templeogue from a tight angle before Denis Bastick kicked one of the scores of the evening from 40 yards off his right to put his side 1-5 to 0-4 ahead. Na Fianna full forward Conor Mc Hugh scored his second point from close range after a rare Na Fianna attack before disaster struck for the Mobhi Road men. A high hanging ball was delievered by Denis Bastick from 45 yards right to the edge of the Na Fianna square to create the most thankless task for any senior club defender in Dublin; being one on one with Eoghan O'Gara 10 yards out under a high ball. The Dublin forward gathered above Niall Cooper, and with the deftest of touches slipped it past McCarville to put his side 2-5 to 0-5 clear on 29 minutes. If anything it encapsulated Na Fianna's tactical naivety at times; they had a sweeping defender for the entire first half but it largely operated in no-man's land often 45 yards out from their own goal. And, in this particular incident, the sweeper was stranded in the centre back position. Na Fianna's only response was Conor McHugh's third point from play, a nice fisted effort from close range to leave the half time score at 2-5 to 0-6 to Templeogue. Na Fianna produced a vastly improved performance after the break. They were helped by directing more of their kick-outs at their midfielders who were well able to catch aerial ball. Templeogue admittedly didn't help themselves either by retreating far more than was necessary into their own half. Cillian O'Gara opened the second half scoring for Templeogue by firing over from close range after a nice pass from Niall Scully. Dublin All-Ireland U21 winner, Scully, played a very effective role at wing forward throughout, carrying the ball from deep and linking well with the likes of O'Gara. The introduction of Na Fianna substitute Eoghan Neville before the break added some much needed impetus to the Na Fianna attack, and he used his pace well to beat two defenders and score a nice effort off his right on 40 minutes. Na Fianna had now switched Dublin panellist Niall McGovern onto Eoghan O'Gara and while he did a fine job marshalling him in the second half, he couldn't prevent him scoring Synge Street's next score. Taking a ball on the terrace side of the pitch, O'Gara traversed his way sideways across the park beating three defenders to hit a cracker off his right to put his side 2-7 to 0-8 ahead. When Ger Vickery added another for Templeogue on 45 minutes the game looked like petering out. But credit to Na Fianna they dominated the last 15 minutes as midfielders Carl O'Connor and JJ Martin got a foot-hold at midfield and the Caffrey brothers, Neville and Mc Hugh started to make inroads up front to hit four unanswered points. The first came from Jack Caffrey when he pointed a nice score off his left, and this was followed by further scores by Neville, a free from Adam Caffrey and a lovely right footed score by David Quinn to leave the score-line at 2-8 to 0-12 after 51 minutes. All of a sudden Templeogue looked vulnerable, but talisman O'Gara had other ideas. A seemingly fruitless attack by Synge Street was turned into a score by the full forward when he dropped back into the pocket and fired over from 40 metres. It led to a frantic last five minutes as Na Fianna threw everything at a retreating Templeogue side. Adam Caffrey took a pass from his brother Jack and fired over to leave just two points in it. Mc Hugh and Neville then combined brilliantly, for the full forward to score his fourth point from play from close range to leave the minimum between the sides with time up. The Mobhi Road side had a chance to level it on 62 minutes when a free was awarded 47 metres out in a central position. It looked like a kick for a goalkeeper but Na Fianna opted to try to engineer a score by kicking short. The ball was intercepted and cleared and the referee blew for full time. It summed up Na Fianna's day, as Templeogue were fully deserving of their victory on a score-line of 2-9 to 0-14 and now move forward to the last eight. Star Man: Eoghan O'Gara (Templeogue Synge Street) The Dublin full forward gave an outstanding display of ball winning, leadership and score-taking, notching 1-5 from play in the process. He was central to everything Synge Street did on the night and was the best player on the pitch by a considerable distance. Others to shine for Templeogue were Niall Scully, Conor Mc Kiernan and Denis Bastick in a very cohesive team performance. It was a forgettable night for Na Fianna overall as a team, but individually Conor Mc Hugh, Adam Caffrey and substitute Eoghan Neville gave good performances.
