St Finian's hopes of Intermediate championship honours were dashed in Parnell Park on Wednesday last as they went under to Templeogue Synge Street in the semi-final. Played in cold blustery conditions the disappointing attendance had very little to get excited about during a mediocre hours football.
The winners richly deserved their success and now go on to meet either Kilmacud Crokes or St Brigid's who played out an exciting draw (0-9 to 1-6) in the other semi-final.
Although the elements favoured the River Valley side in the opening half they appeared in serious trouble at the interval when they actually found themselves training by 0-5 to 04. Two minutes after the restart they got on level terms from a 20 metre free but they failed to register another score for a further 26 minutes.
They had their chances but lack of penetration coupled with some good defensive work by the winners saw them register just two points for the second half.
Warren Hanley gave the losers a good start when pointing in the opening minute. The city side opened their account after six minutes thanks to Ger Vickery while Declan Treanor gave them the lead in the 11th minute.
Just at the end of the opening quarter David Hattie equalised from a free after Joe Greene was grounded. The winners then had a good spell and points from Treanor, Cathal Morley and Brian McKiernan gave them a three points cushion by the 26th minute (0-5 to 0-2).
St Finian's finished the half strongly though and points from Greene and Mark Deignan left them trailing by just one point (0-5 to 0-4) at the interval.
Things got even better after the restart as Dwyane Price brought the sides level with a converted free. However, Finian's failed to push on from there and it was Templeogue who upped the tempo with points from Morley (2), Eoghan O'Gara and Denis Bastic edging them four points in front with 50 minutes gone.
With just four minutes remaining Templeogue put the gloss on the win as they grabbed the only goal of the game. They were awarded a free from near midfield which Bastic took and this landed 20 metres out. O'Gara collected the ball and turning sharply he drilled a left footed shot into the net.
As a contest the game was now over but credit to Finian's who fought to the bitter end with their final score coming from Kevin Ryan.

Synger's heroics seal Inter success

TEMPLEOGUE SYNGE ST 2-7 KILMACUD CROKES 0-10

Tuesday October 21 2008

TOWERING Templeogue Synge Street hit the right note at the right time at Parnell Park on Sunday when Ger Vickery's 62nd-minute goal clinched the Dublin Intermediate Football championship in dramatic style.
Crokes will rue two missed goal chances in the second half, but Anton O'Toole's men deserve huge credit for sticking with it right up until the end and showing great mettle, particularly after losing centre-back, Anthony Hendricks to concussion midway through the second half.
Certainly at that stage, Templeogue Synge Street were under siege with the introduction of Niall Fox for the remaining 20 minutes revitalising Crokes' fortunes up front.
But overall they had their work cut out breaking down a resolute Synger defence with Niall Crowley giving a superb display in the full-back line.
Having only just come back from a troublesome ankle injury substitute, Crowley, who was introduced before the break, never conceded an inch and certainly rallied the troops after the break.
The opening minutes had seen Vickery and Garreth Fox exchange points before impressive wing-back Conor McKiernan began and concluded a clinical move with a point to restore the Templeogue Synge St lead.
Points from Fox and Peter Devitt each side of an Eoghan O'Gara score then tied proceedings before Niall Behan put Crokes ahead for the first time in the 18th minute.
But after Declan Treanor had drawn the sides level once more, Templeogue Synger then opened up a goal lead on 26 minutes when Treanor launched a high diagonal ball into the danger zone.
Goal-scorer O'Gara did brilliantly to first outfield his marker before creating the angle and rifling to the far corner of the net past a helpless Robbie Davis in the Crokes goal.
There followed a score apiece from Devitt and Treanor to leave it 1-5 to 0-5 at half-time, but Crokes almost found the net on the restart with Cathal Turley shooting across the face of the goal after Niall Behan had released him one-on-one against Eamonn Spilliane with a perfectly timed pass.
Crokes made up for that with five unanswered points starting with a Barry Fox free on 36 minutes. Gareth Fox and talented full-back David McGuane followed suit to even this battle up once more, with Niall Fox then putting Crokes ahead immediately after his introduction. Hendricks then departed, causing a bit of delay. But Crokes maintained their flow with Turley hitting the side-netting as he attempted to fist home a ball played in by Niall Fox.
Gareth Fox then added a free -- their fifth point in succession -- but with Denis Bastick and Conor O'Reilly offering their team plenty of physicality in midfield, Synger were still in the hunt.
And after Brian McKiernan had opened his team's second-half account on 57 minutes, he was then instrumental in setting up the vital winning goal.
Having taken a pass off Alan O'Brien, he accelerated down the right before cleverly picking out Ger Vickery on the far side of the parallelogram. It was a high-pressure moment but Vickery didn't buckle when picking his spot and blasting past 'keeper Davis. The game was now up for Crokes with Treanor sending over a free to bring the Dublin IFC cup for the first time since the club amalgated 10 years ago. Synger (as Synge St Past Pupils) last won the trophy back in 1960.
