McConnell shines for Templeogue’s U21s

THERE was delight for Templeogue Synge Street U21 footballers when they overcame the challenge of St Brigid’s 2-11 to 1-08 in Russell Park on Saturday afternoon.

Sean McConnell was the star of the show for the winners, helping himself to two goals and eight points as he tormented the Brigid’s defence throughout.

Brigid’s started the contest in the best possible manner with the opening three points before McConnell kicked the first of his points on the outside of his right boot.

But then Templeogue hit a purple patch, registering one goal and five points without reply with the goal coming from McConnell who volleyed home following good work from Dublin senior player Lorcan O’Dell.

Fintan Dignam tagged on two points during this period while McConnell added two more as the visitors replied with one score on the stroke of half time.

Ahead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the break, Synger extended their lead a minute into the second half from that man McConnell after a good built-up.

Brigid’s replied with two pointed scores before McConnell from play kicked one of the scores of the day from close to the side line.

Synger were in the driving seat when they bagged a second goal mid-way through the half when the ball was fed through to McConnell and he made no mistake.

Further points from Sean Cooney and McConnell put the game out of reach, but the Blanchardstown outfit finished with two late consolation scores – a goal and point to close the gap.

Templeogue’s defence was well-marshalled by captain Barra Dignam at full back along with Arron Devitt and Sean Ruane the two corner backs.

Half back Andrew Cotter drove forward at every opportunity from right half back.

Forward Fintan Dignam’s direct running style caused St Brigid’s defence all sorts of trouble as they struggled to contain the rampant McConnell and O’Dell.

The Templeogue outfit was made up of Scott McConnell, a Dublin minor footballer in 2021 and Faughs senior hurlers, keeper Max Fitzgerald who was a member of the Dublin U20 squad in 2022 and Conor Curran, nephew of former Dublin great Paul Curran.

Templeogue Synge Street footballers seal U-15 boys’ Division 2 title on a dramatic final day of season Darragh Friel to the fore with 3-4 for Synger against Ballinteer St John’s The Templeogue Synge Street U-15 boys' team.
November 14 2022 03:21 PM The under-15 boys’ team of Templeogue Synge Street signed off their 2022 season in style, claiming the Division 2 title due to a dramatic turn of events. Going into the final round of fixtures, Synger were battling it out with St Pat’s Donabate for top honours. Pat’s, who had beaten Synge Street earlier in the season, hosted Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh while Ballinteer St John’s made their way to Dolphin Park. Ballinteer had a stake in the game as a loss would doom them to Division 3. The match began as a tight affair, with each side matching the other for scores. News then filtered through to the sideline from Donabate that Plunkett’s had won by a point, thanks to a last-gasp goal. All Synger had to do now was win – their destiny was in their hands. As the half wore on, Templeogue turned the screw, with an exceptional Darragh Friel bagging two goals to leave Synger with a healthy half-time lead of 2-6 to 0-4. Photo: Gillian Donnelly Templeogue enjoyed an easier second half despite a physical contest, with great movement from a half-forward line that included Kerrin King, Brandon Carolan and Conleth Fitzpatrick. Friel added a third goal near the end to copper-fasten the result and leave him with a scoring total of 3-4 for the contest. He didn’t do it all by himself, as he was aided massively by Cal Denvir’s attacking ability. The defence shut up shop, with Seán O’Brien, Conor Kelly and Hugh Byrne snuffing out Ballinteer attacks, reading the game well and ever-watchful for any potential threat. Searing runs by half-back Eoghan Brennan led to many attacks being launched on the Ballinteer goal as captain Colm McCabe marshalled his side well. One of the Synger subs, Harry O’Donovan, had only landed back in Dublin airport an hour before the game after a trip to France but made sure he was on hand to give his teammates a dig-out in midfield. In goal, James Wallace was solid and had to make a couple of telling interventions to prevent BSJ from grabbing a goal or two. The final score, 3-11 to 0-8, was a fair reflection of the clash and Synger will now go up to Division 1 with Plunkett’s.

Pushed all the way by a resolute Erin’s Isle side, defending champions Templeogue Synge Street eventually advanced to the last four of the Dublin Minor ‘B’ Football Championship with an extra-time victory at Dolphin Park on Sunday.

With little over 20 minutes of regular time remaining, the hosts were left with a mountain to climb as they Trailed 1-4 to 0-2. However, thanks in no small part to the contributions of Dublin minor Scott McConnell and Fintan Dignam, TSS forced the game into two additional periods.

With momentum on their side, they gained the ascendancy and were on top for the closing stages of the action. Rowan Finnegan fired to the net from the last kick of the game and Synger can now switch their focus to a forthcoming semi-final.

edition

It was close to two months ago that the Southsiders triumphed in the delayed 2020 edition of the ‘B’ Championship – another extra-time success over Fingal Ravens. Eight squad members from that impressive win featured at the Crumlin Road venue last weekend, including McConnell.

He broke the deadlock in the ninth minute by converting a free in fine style. TSS had survived an early scare when netminder Niall Fitzgibbon turned away Tadhg Gorman’s goal-bound effort for Isles, but Philip Ryan’s side largely dominated possession around the middle third.

However, the home team found it difficult to convert industry into accuracy and registered nine wides by the first-half water break. Having soaked up considerable pressure, Isles levelled matters through a Gorman free on 21 minutes.

That was the launchpad for a positive end to the opening period from the visitors. Following excellent approach work by Ollie Gaffney and Alex Matthews, wing-forward Luke Dunne grabbed the maiden goal of the contest.

Nathan Fitzgerald and Gorman then split the uprights as the Finglas men brought a 1-3 to 0-1 cushion into the interval.

Despite losing to TSS on home turf during the group stages, Isles remained in the frame for the penultimate rounds, and wing-back Cian Moran cancelled out a McConnell score on the resumption.

stride

Yet Synger finally hit their stride approaching the third-quarter mark. Adding to another McConnell single, Dignam registered three magnificent points to reduce the gap to the bare minimum.

Although Aaron Duff ensured Isles were two in front on 47 minutes, TSS looked ready for a big push.

A stubborn Isles defence kept them at bay until a straight red card for Dunne presented Synge Street with a numerical advantage with the final whistle on the horizon.

After substitute Evan Sheehan found the target, McConnell showed nerves of steel to convert a free that left the sides inseparable at the end of regulation time (1-5 to 0-8).

Even though they had their full complement for the start of extra-time, Isles lost midfielder Fitzgerald to a black card soon after the restart. Luke Davis had already edged TSS ahead by then, and after Fitzgibbon pulled off a superb penalty save from Gorman on 69 minutes, McConnell effortlessly doubled their lead.

In a somewhat chaotic conclusion, TSS finished with just 12 players following the dismissals of Sheehan (black card), Dignam and Conor Curran (both red). Nevertheless, after Gorman and McConnell had traded frees, Finnegan kicked over, in an emphatic fashion, to finally place the outcome beyond doubt.

Templeogue Synge Street produced a stirring second-half comeback before eventually overcoming a battling Fingal Ravens by 3-13 to 1-16 after extra-time to claim the Dublin Minor ‘B’ Football Championship title at Parnell Park last Wednesday.

Synger looked dead and buried as they trailed by four points entering injury-time but a late penalty from Scott McConnell followed by a superb ‘45’ from goalkeeper Max Fitzgerald left matters deadlocked at 1-12 to 2-9 by full-time.

The winners looked far fresher in extra-time as injuries took their toll on a battling Ravens outfit and Diarmuid Greene pounced for a vital goal to help secure his team’s victory.

“It was a great performance from the lads and there was no panic from them even though we were trailing by eight points,” said Templeogue mentor Larry McCormack.

In what was an excellent team display, the likes of McConnell, Conor Curran, Sean Cooney, Sean McCormack and Fintan Dignam played key roles in getting their team over the line.

For Ravens, it proved a tough defeat to take given their excellence in the first-half with Sean Kinsella shining from centre-forward in addition to the scoring contributions of Josh Flanagan, Ben Duffy, Daniel Cibotar, Jack Hannon and Dylan Kettle.

“We are so proud of the lads and we couldn’t have asked for any more. We were missing a few starters but still played extremely well on the night,” said Ravens mentor Joe McBrearty.

THIS year saw Templeogue Synge Street opt to field two Minor football teams for the very first time and it proved a wise move as both have now reached their respective championship finals.

A three-point victory over Naomh Olaf in Dolphin Park on Sunday saw the firsts book their place in the Minor B decider against Fingal Ravens while the seconds can look forward to a clash with St Sylvester’s in the Minor E Championship Final after they earned a 5-14 to 1-11 triumph away to Skerries Harps in the last four of the competition.

In the former match Scott McConnell and Fintan Dignam proved a real thorn in the side of the Olafs defence with the latter finding the back of the net and tagging on two points while McConnell fired over six times.

Among the other scorers for the Templeogue side were Rian Maher, Jack Grimes, goalkeeper Max Fitzgerald, Sean Cooney, Conor Curran and Henry Horne.

Defenders Conal Cunningham and Daragh Donovan along with substitute Andrew Cotter and midfielder Sean McCormack also turned in good shifts as Templeogue built on their narrow one-point lead at halftime.

Meanwhile it was goals galore for the Templeogue B team as they cruised to a 15-point victory in Skerries.

Matthew Henley, Peter McNamara and Oisin McMahon all starred for the winners, who like the A team, will be playing their final on September 20.

Neighbours Faughs are another club benefiting from the huge influx of players here as many of them are hurling with the Templeogue side also.

This has led to Faughs also fielding two hurling teams at this level with the Minor Ds having reached their Championship final where they will face off against Cuala on Sunday.

Templeogue topple Boden in a thriller Sports August 20, 2020 Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Email Share By Daire Walsh Ballyboden St Enda’s 2-8 Templeogue Synge Street 4-3 CONOR Brennan delivered an outstanding performance against Ballyboden St Enda’s at Ballycullen on Tuesday evening to help hand Templeogue Synge Street a winning start to their Dublin Under 15A Football Championship Group Four campaign. The impressive inside forward was a menacing presence throughout and scored a brace of goals in each half while netminder Dan Coogan was another to stand out for the visitors, producing a string of top-drawer saves. Ballyboden V T Synge St 08 Leon Murphy of Ballyboden and Templeogue’s James McCormack battle for a loose ball during Tuesday evening’s Under 15A Football Championship clash in Ballycullen Hosts Ballyboden had led for large stretches of the contest - thanks in no small part to half-forward Lee McConnell’s two-goal salvo. Dylan Timbs and Mark McGlynn also finished with 0-2 apiece, but the attacking prowess of Brennan ultimately saw them come up short. It was ‘Boden who enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Daniel McCarthy and Mark McGlynn raising white flags in quick succession. Templeogue centre-back Daragh Murphy was driving his team forward at every available opportunity, but their opponents remained in control. Coogan tipped over a goal-bound Kevin Byrne attempt on nine minutes and Timbs added a free to increase their lead to four points. Centre-forward Sam Lewis got Templeogue up and running with a well-worked point, before Brennan rattled the opposition net for the first time 15 minutes in. Boden quickly reasserted themselves and Byrne released the onrushing McConnell who coolly slotted beyond the reach of Coogan. Templeogue knuckled down for the remainder of the half and they were rewarded on 26 minutes when Brennan embarked on a surging run up the right-hand side. Like he had done for McConnell’s earlier effort, referee Bobby Moran signalled an advantage for the attacker - whose powerful shot was too strong for Conor Buttler. Coogan later turned away a McGlynn strike to ensure Templeogue were on level terms (2-1 to 1-4) with their southside neighbours at the interval. Just two minutes after the resumption, Brennan was picked out deep inside the ‘Boden half and, following a neat ‘one-two’ with full-forward Donal Murray, he completed his hat-trick in clinical style. Although they now found themselves adrift, the ‘Boden challenge was never going to be dismissed lightly. McGlynn kicked an excellent point on the run and McConnell converted a penalty after Byrne was taken down inside the square. Templeogue issued an immediate response through Murphy, who ventured forward to dissect the uprights off his left boot. ‘Boden regained the ascendancy with an Alex Young single, only for the magnificent Brennan to once again produce the goods for Templeogue. He hit the roof of the ‘Boden net for his fourth goal of the night and with substitute Robert Bell registering a pointed free, TSS were in the box seat on the third-quarter mark. ‘Boden reduced their arrears with Leon Murphy and Timbs points, but were also turned over on a number of occasions by a tenacious Templeogue defence. While Larry McCormack’s visiting team came under intense pressure during six minutes of stoppage-time, they eventually held out for the two points on offer.
